Voting system

How Ranked Choice Voting Works

Redondo Beach uses Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for all municipal elections. Voters rank candidates in order of preference — first choice, second choice, third choice, and so on.

01

First-choice votes are counted

If a candidate has more than 50% of first-choice votes, they win.

02

Last-place candidate is eliminated

The candidate with the fewest votes is removed from the count.

03

Votes are redistributed

Voters who chose the eliminated candidate have their votes transferred to their next-ranked choice.

04

Repeat until a majority winner

Steps 2 and 3 repeat until one candidate has more than 50%.

RCV was adopted by Redondo Beach voters in 2017 (Measure G) and first used in the March 2025 election. It replaces the traditional runoff system, saving the city the cost of a separate runoff election.
